Based on Frank Abagnale, Jr.'s 1980 autobiography, Catch Me if You Can was a loooong time in the making. The first pitch was in 1981; that same year, it was announced that Dustin Hoffman would play the lead. Finally, Spielberg announced in 2001 he would just do it himself.
