The answer is 'Speak & Spell'. Texas Instruments' Speak & Spell was introduced in 1978 and was the first computer many families ever owned. 'Not a computer', you say? Well, it has a keyboard, a screen, a processor and a cartridge slot for new vocabulary. Sounds like a computer to us. It was immortalised as part of E.T.'s 'phone home' contraption in the iconic 1982 movie.
