Even though this looks unusual, it's also odd and humorous. As unlikely as it seems, these kinds of scenarios often happen. The boat in this picture is a sloop. Back in the day, they were the most common type of pirate ship, designed to sail super fast and swing around trees near the water.

Nowadays, a modern sloop is a sailboat with a single mast, a jib, and a mainsail. You'll usually find a Bermuda rig or gaff rig on most of these boats. It's called a "fore-and-aft" rig because it positions the sails at an angle to the wind, instead of directly forward. A sloop can be classified as a cutter or catboat depending on the style and number of jibs.
