OpenAI has officially announced that its advanced voice mode will begin rolling out to subscribers today, with a complete rollout expected within a week. This new model will be distinct from the standard voice mode, represented by a black spinning ball, while the advanced voice mode will feature a blue spinning ball. Additionally, the update introduces five new voice options and emphasizes personalized settings.
According to OpenAI researchers, users can customize their instructions, allowing the model to adopt specific accents, remember important events, and address users in their preferred manner. One researcher provided an example: if a user inputs their name and city, the model can offer tailored weekend plans based on the user’s location.
It’s important to note that, for now, the advanced voice mode is only available to ChatGPT Plus and Team account users, while free users can still access the standard voice mode. Plus and Team users will also face daily usage limits for the advanced voice feature, which may vary. When only 15 minutes of advanced voice usage remain for the day, OpenAI will send a notification to users.
Moreover, the advanced voice mode does not support GPTs, which are user-designed OpenAI agents. Due to its sensitivity to voice response times, the advanced mode may also be more easily interrupted in noisy environments.
Finally, OpenAI has added a fun twist to the advanced voice mode: ChatGPT can now express “I’m sorry I’m late, I didn’t mean to keep you waiting” in over fifty languages.
As OpenAI continues to innovate and improve its offerings, this feature not only elevates the usability of voice interactions but also reinforces the commitment to delivering a more engaging and responsive AI. Users are encouraged to explore these new capabilities and provide feedback, helping to shape the future of conversational AI.
